"1948," Ken Sibanda directed film on Apartheid, begins principal photography

Ken Sibanda's ‘1948,’ a film that deals with Apartheid’s new laws of 1948 when the National Party came into power has commenced principal photography. The film is based on a play by Ken Sibanda entitled - 'The Tragic Circumstances of 1948.'

The film is being filmed on sound stage at a Harlem theatre, in the tradition of Lawrence Olivier.

The script penned by Ken Sibanda is produced by Proteus Filmworks . Mr. Sibanda is the author of the popular science fiction novel - The Return to Gibraltar. A trained attorney who graduated from University of London as a lawyer, and holds a dual Masters in Law ( Litigation) from Temple and California Western, Sibanda has penned numerous books both fiction and non-fiction.

‘1948,’ a work of historic fiction, whose longline is ’sound of freedom,’ tells the story of Tony Mzila a cafe owner in Simon's Town Cape Town who refuses to serve two police offices coffee and toast. The published play, is set in South Africa 1948.

It further tells the procedural problems with Apartheid legal system. The movie will likely bring to the fore a further understanding of Apartheid as a , type of system.

Speaking in his offices in New York, Sibanda, said: ‘ The story of Apartheid is a personal narrative worth the telling, most of South African based plays have been apologetic or magical, this play looks at the unnecessary human suffering which Apartheid caused for black South Africans. It is an engaging story, fresh and filled with the sought of stuff movie goers want to see. The drama is human and relevant.’
