Art Park Open House

Riker Hill showcases its artists today.

Visitors can hike through former army barracks this weekend to see displays and demonstrations by diverse artists.  The work of over 40 different artists will converge in the main gallery at Riker Hill Art Park under the title “Riker 2009.”

Riker Hill Art Park formerly served as army living quarters, but were transformed into artist studios when Essex County purchased the land.  Art spectators are recommended to wear walking shoes as they travel through studios and watch demonstrations.

“This is to promote the awareness of the park as well as the artists who are working there,” said Kelly Zeik of the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historical Affairs.

This free open house, which is held bi-annually in the spring and the fall, promotes awareness of the artists renting studios at Riker Hill.  About 500 visitors from as far as West Orange come to each event and have the opportunity to purchase the artwork they see.

The artists work under a variety of disciplines including: paint, clay, jewelry, glass blowing, sculpture and photography.  Despite the popularity of this event, the open house will not be held more than twice a year.

“We want to keep it bi-annual,” said Sue Sach, Artist Organizer for this event.  “More than that and it loses its specialness.”

The Riker Hill Art Park is always open to the public.  It is recommended that visitors make appointments with artists before arriving.  If people don’t know the individual artist the Division of Cultural Affairs of Essex County has a list of all the artists.

The Riker Hill Art Park is located at 284 Beaufort Avenue, located off of Eisenhower Parkway near Route 10, and the event will run from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M.  For questions or more info please visit www.essexcountynj.org or call 973-239-2485.
