Top-seed West Essex defeated the Livingston lacrosse team 11-4 in the quarterfinals of the Essex County Tournament on a very hot Sunday, but not without the Lancers putting up a good match, especially in the first half.
Livingston (11-5) raced to an early 3-1 lead. Lancer Andrew Lesser carried the load early for Livingston, as he tallied two of his team-high three goals in the first 16 minutes. At half-time, the score was deadlocked at 3-3.
But the Knights (12-1) came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the third period and they outscored Livingston, 5-0. Led by good goal play from Mike Wiatrak, and the play of Tom Black and Joe Fusco, the Knights showed why they are the top team in the county. Black and Fusco had three goals apiece and applied as much heat on the Lancers' defense as the actual temperature.

By the time the fourth period rolled around, the Knights were up 8-3 and just looking to play some keep away. There was a seven-minute stretch in the fourth when West Essex controlled the ball and never allowed Livingston to even cross midfield.
The Lancers face North Brunswick on Friday.
