After The Storm: A Patch Kid's Tale
Welcome to J. Klonsky, who joins our Patch Kids writing about the world around them.
When my mom, Patch reporter L. Klonsky, asked if I wanted to take a ride with her around town to see some of the effects of Hurricane Irene, I jumped at the chance. She had already taken some pictures earlier and I thought it would be interesting to see what was going on. Plus stretching a few brain cells might help me get ready for school.
What I saw was scary. I saw a downed wire about a block away from our house. Mom made sure we didn’t cross the wire because that would have been dangerous. Executive Parkway was flooded with much of the parking lot under water. Some guy in a pickup truck decided to drive through the water. That was stupid! He could have gotten stuck.
Some streets in town were literally a swamp. I saw a brook on Broadlawn that had busted open a gate; the water was overflowing and streaming into the street. I saw both town pools higher than I’ve ever seen them before. And there were a lot of emergency vehicles on their way to helping people out.

I felt scared, surprised, and was amazed at how much damage had been done in just a day. Hurricane Irene made me understand how devastating a flood can be.
