Beware Fraudulent FedEx and UPS Emails

New scam warning: emails seeking payments to forward a package from abroad.

I have been informed, and I have confirmed, that fraudulent emails are being sent to unsuspecting residents from both FedEx and UPS, informing the recipients that packages being sent to them from abroad have not had adequate duties paid, and that to receive the package, additional fees have to be paid in advance.

The recipient is notified that since the package contains their name and email address, the recipient is responsible for the deficiency in fees, usually amounting to a few hundred dollars.

This mailing may have come from someone who hacked a friend's address book, or any of a number of other sources. A foreign telephone number is provided for the alleged claims Officer.

Unless you know that you have ordered something from abroad, do not send any money or even call the number provided. Some of these foreign numbers are used to capture your telephone number which is then used fraudulently and can result in phone bills running thousands of dollars.

I thank the person alerting me of this new scam, so I could pass it on, and again ask any resident who receives something similar to also advise me, so I keep our residents informed.
