Livingston Celebrates Arbor Day on April 27

Livingston Celebrates Arbor Day on April 27 at the Gazebo, Memorial Oval

Arbor Day, is a national holiday which is celebrated on the last Friday in April. Since 1872, when pioneer J. Sterling Morton first dedicated the holiday to tree planting, Arbor Day has continued to reshape the landscape of America. The Arbor Day Foundation distributes and plants an estimated 15 million trees each year, and provides citizens with a valuable resource. Trees help to improve air quality by filtering out dust and other particles. They help to conserve water, and provide a renewable source of fuel and food as well as shelter for a variety of wildlife. Trees also increase property values and reduce energy use, adding to the beauty of our homes, and neighborhoods where we live, work, and play.

Livingston has been dedicated as a Tree City USA community by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation which sponsors the program in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters. This national designation was bestowed in April 2010 in recognition of the Township’s commitment to urban forestry.

“There are four standards that a town or city must meet in order to become a Tree City USA community,” explained Mayor Stephen A. Santola. “Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.”
