Livingston Sidewalk Reconstruction Initiative

Livingston Sidewalk Reconstruction Initiative

In continual efforts to improve the Livingston community, the Township announced today the start of its Town-wide Sidewalk Reconstruction Initiative. The Initiative will reconstruct the sidewalks on Township properties to provide a safe area for residents to walk. “The goal is to improve the ‘walkability’ of the Township,” announced Jeannette Harduby, Livingston Township Assistant Engineer. “And this Sidewalk Reconstruction Initiative will not only improve the aesthetics of our residential neighborhoods, it will encourage residents to walk more often, promoting a healthier lifestyle.”

In compliance with ADA standards, 2600 sq yards of asphalt sidewalks will be reconstructed of concrete , with barrier free ramps (as necessary), and driveway aprons (as needed) on Township-owned properties on residential streets throughout Livingston including Livingston Ave (North and South), Hillside Ave, North Hillside Ave, and Northfield Road. “The Township is dedicated to accommodating all modes of travel and all users from kids walking to school, to bicyclists, to the physically able and the physically challenged, as well as cars, busses, and trucks,” continued Harduby. “These complete streets will improve accessibility for pedestrian traffic.”

“This Initiative may also help to create a ‘greener community’ by reducing the use of motor vehicles (and the subsequent pollution caused by those vehicles),” added Harduby. In addition to being ADA compliant, the reconstructed sidewalks will also comply with Township Ordinance 27 (2010) that requires new and reconstructed sidewalks to be installed in concrete. The bid for this contract was won by AJS Associates (Hillside, New Jersey) at a project cost of approximately $125,012 and approved by the Township Council at their May 7th meeting. This project will be paid through the Capital Budget. Work will start within the next month (weather permitting) and will take around one month to complete.
