LPS Weekly News: It's Homecoming in Livingston

LPS teacher Greer Gelman will be among the honored Livingston High School alumni who have made their mark in the world. She’s a kindergarten teacher at Collins Elementary School, where everything our students need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be is learned.

“She’s a very kind teacher,” said one of her students when we visited the class earlier this week. “She takes good care of us. I love her and I hug her all the time.”

Gelman will be in good company at today's Hall of Fame reception.

This year’s honorees are Brandon Bodow, a producer at ABC’s Good Morning America; Jeffrey D. Dollinger, a leading residential real estate attorney in New Jersey; and Stephen Oremus, the music director, vocal arranger and co-orchestrator of The Book of Mormon, for which he received the 2011 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Orchestrations. He received a 2012 Grammy award as a producer of The Book of Mormon original Broadway cast recording.

Two members of the Livingston education community will be also honored for their Leadership in Educational Achievement and Dedication -- Ralph Celebre, retired Principal at Hillside Elementary School; and Fraida Yavelberg, retired District Supervisor of Special Education.

Special Homecoming events planned by the Livingston Education Foundation will raise money to buy the technology that is changing faster than students can text.

At Collins, where Bodow’s mother Michelle Bodow is the school’s gifted and talented teacher, Miss Gelman's kindergarten class is living the simple credo that all we really need to know we learned in Kindergarten. But sometimes kids need a reminder. Leading up to Homecoming, Livingston schools were teaching Respect, another of the 3 R's students study everyday. The lessons are directed in part by New Jersey's tough new anti-bullying law.
