National Honor For Livingston Public Schools
Magna Awards recognize the District for outstanding program that advance student learning in technology.

Livingston Public Schools is being honored nationally for a program designed to develop the confidence and skills of middle school girls to study science, technology, engineering, and math.
The District was selected as a first-place winner in the Magna Awards program sponsored by the National School Boards Association. Specifically cited is the Heritage Middle School FemGineers (Female Engineering Club).
The FemGineers was created to encourage middle school girls to get involved in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), and help them develop the confidence and skills to continue in higher-level high school math and science courses. The club started with 10 eighth-grade girls. Five years later, the program has grown to include more than 60 girls who find solutions to real-world problems. Female students’ math scores on standardized tests have also improved and they are enrolling in the higher-level high school math and science classes.
“Already the club has helped close gender inequities previously seen in Livingston in math and science classes,” said Superintendent Dr. Brad Draeger. “The female students have consistently proven themselves to be problem solvers, innovators, and inventors.”
The Magna Awards, sponsored by the American School Board Journal and supported by Sodexo, recognize districts across the country for outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools.
“The Magna Awards showcase the great work going on in local school districts across the country to increase student achievement and success,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, Executive Director of NSBA.
Livingston is the only New Jersey school being honored nationally by the association.
