New Car Theft Trend: Thief Swipes Keys From Livingston Home, Drives Porsche Away

It's a new trend: A burglar breaks into a home from the rear, steals the car keys, then takes the car. It happened in Livingston again.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — It seems to be a new car theft tactic in Essex County: A burglar enters a home from the rear, grabs the car keys, then takes the car.

North Jersey officials have spent the last few years begging residents not to leave key fobs in their cars, but now they may have to tell them not to leave them on their kitchen counters, either.

Officials responded at 5:53 a.m. last Wednesday, Feb. 8, to an Irving Avenue residence on a report of a burglary.

The homeowner said they heard her alarm sound and contacted police. The person got in through a rear window and stole the keys for a 2022 Porsche Cayenne.

Then, the burglar made off with the car, which was in the driveway. The Livingston Detective Bureau is investigating.
