The Livingston Public Library welcomes you to our brand new LivGreen Book Club on Wednesday, April 29th at 7pm. We will be discussing Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. LivGreen is a virtual book club for the environmentally curious! Registration begins on Monday, March 9th at 10am. Please pick up a copy of the book at the Library starting Monday, March 16th.
Let's get together and delve into engaging green themes through a variety of books, articles or podcasts. Whether storytelling or documented research - we can share our perspectives, take-aways and how the themes relate to actions we could take in our community, and for the planet. The discussion will be moderated by Alison Burmas of the Livingston Environmental Commission.
The meeting is free and open to everyone ages 18 and up. The Zoom link will be emailed the day before the event.

VIRTUAL LivGreen Book Club: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to join us&nbsp; for the Library’s April Senior Happening performance, where the Livingston High School Jazz Band, under the direction of James Hegedus, will make its 24th annual appearance at the Livingston Library’s Senior Happening on Friday, April 17th at 1pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch, while enjoying desserts and coffee served by the Friends of the Library volunteers. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.

Registration is required and may be done in person at the library; by telephone at (973) 992-4600; or online at www.livingstonlibrary.org. Livingston and other Essex County residents may register starting Monday, March 30th.

Senior Happening is made possible in part by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

After the immense success of the past 2 years, the Livingston Public Library invites you to participate in our 2026 Seed Library. Starting Monday, April 20th, stop by the library’s Reference department to browse our collection and pick from a variety of flower, herb and vegetable seeds, many of which are organic, heirloom and native to New Jersey. Please take only what you need, limited to 5 seed envelopes a week. When your plants have matured, harvest the seeds and bring them back to the library for the cycle to continue.

Seeds are FREE for anyone to take. You don’t have to bring seeds back, but it helps us if you do.&nbsp;
This Seed Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Livingston Public Library and through donations provided by the following garden centers: Burpee Seed Company, American Meadows, Great Swamp Greenhouses, Cerbo’s Greenhouse and Eden Brothers.

She’ll unpack common myths about recycling and the circular economy, share surprising facts about how everyday habits add up, and offer simple, practical steps for reducing waste at home and in your community.&nbsp;

You’ll leave informed, inspired, and empowered to make small changes that have a big impact.

Melanie Mannarino is a writer and editor specializing in wellness and lifestyle content. Her work has appeared in Real Simple, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and other media brands, and she's the author of four books.&nbsp; Her interest in sustainability was prompted by her mother, who was scouring garage sales and secondhand clothing stores before it was cool. Today, Melanie composts for her herb and vegetable garden, has a killer vintage clothing collection, and drives a 2012 hybrid vehicle — because it’s better to keep something functional in circulation than to send it to the landfill or junkyard in favor of something new.

Beyond the Bin: What Really Happens to the Stuff We Toss

Look up the word iconoclast, and you might expect to find Marcel Duchamp staring back at you. Few artists so radically challenged the assumptions of what art could be—or who could define it. With wit, provocation, and relentless experimentation, Duchamp dismantled traditional standards of skill, beauty, and authorship, ushering in a new era of artistic freedom whose impact continues to shape contemporary art.
Although his work intersected with movements such as Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, and even anticipated Pop Art, the French-American Duchamp resisted belonging to any single style. Instead, he embraced continual self-reinvention and deliberate contradiction. As he famously remarked, “I have forced myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste.” From his early paintings to his revolutionary readymades—ordinary objects redefined as art—Duchamp transformed ideas into his primary medium.
This lecture by speaker Janet Mandel explores Duchamp’s most influential works, his philosophical approach to creativity, and the shockwaves his ideas sent through the art world—shockwaves that are still being felt today. Timed to coincide with a major Duchamp retrospective opening at the Museum of Modern Art on April 12, 2026, this talk offers a timely reassessment of one of the most provocative figures in modern art history.
Presenter Janet Mandel taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Maplewood, where she taught English, art history, and world languages and cultures. Now retired, Janet presents illustrated talks on a variety of art history topics at adult schools, libraries, museums, senior centers, community centers, and similar venues.

Led by Luisa Kaiser, a certified Mat Pilates, Yoga, and Kids Yoga instructor known for her upbeat coaching and encouraging energy, this class is designed to make you feel empowered from the inside out. Expect controlled, athletic movements, intentional breathwork, and accessible variations so every participant can work at their own level while still getting an invigorating full-body workout.
Whether you’re new to Pilates or already living the fitness lifestyle, you’ll leave class feeling stronger, more energized, and confidently connected to your body.
Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga or Pilates mat, wear comfortable workout clothing, and bring water.&nbsp;&nbsp;You are also welcome to bring any small Pilates props you may already own, such as resistance bands, Pilates rings, or small stability balls. These are completely optional — the entire class can also be done with just a mat.
This session is open to adults 18 and up. Space is limited; Registration is encouraged.

To honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Oratorio Society of New Jersey (OSNJ) will perform America Inspired! - a program dedicated to works of a broad range of American composers. The concert will provide a flavor of the rich melting pot of influences that is American music, including liturgical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk, and neo-classical.
The concert takes place on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 pm, at Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Avenue, Montclair.
America Inspired! will feature choral and instrumental works by some of our country’s greatest composers, including Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, William Dawson, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Randall Thompson.
Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door – plus OSNJ has introduced student pricing: $15 in advance, $20 at the door. 
Doors open at 7:00pm for the 7:30pm performance – please arrive early due to General Admission seating.
