Car Recovered in Newark after Carjacking at Livingston Tiger Mart

The following information has been provided by the Livingston Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Livingston police used an anti-theft auto recovery system to find a carjacked car, but they are still seeking the person who took the vehicle, police officials said.

The owner of the car, a 40-year-old West Orange woman, was carjacked Monday from the Livingston Tiger Mart on the corner of South Orange Avenue and East Hobart Gap Road, according to Det. Sgt. Anthony Dippold of the Livingston Police Department.

The car was being vacuumed clean at the Exxon station outside the convenience store with the driver’s side car door open and the engine running.

When the woman finished vacuuming, she stood up and was approached by a black man who pushed her toward the back of the car. The man then jumped in the car and drove off heading east on South Orange Avenue toward South Orange. Police have obtained video of the incident from the Tiger Mart, Dippold said.

The suspect is described as a black man, approximately 20 years old, approximately 6-foot, 2-two inches tall and weighing about 250 pounds.

After the man drove off, the woman called Livingston police and told them what had happened. She also told them the car was equipped with a Lo-Jack anti-theft recovery system, Dippold said.

When police activated the system, they recovered the Camry on Broom Street in Newark, he said. The car was locked with the keys removed.

Police then notified the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the car was towed to their forensic laboratory in Orange to process the evidence.

Dippold also said this is the first Livingston carjacking “in quite some time.”

The incident remains under investigation.
