Earthquake Shakes NJ Friday: Here's Where It Was Felt

​New Jersey was hit by a minor earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

New Jersey was hit by a minor earthquake on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The 2.4-magnitude quake took place around 3:43 p.m. and was centered about six kilometers outside of Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County.

As of Friday evening, nearly 200 people had reported that they felt the earthquake, with reports extending out to Hopatcong, Phillipsburg and Bridgewater.

Earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or less are usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph. Events of 2.5 magnitude to 5.4 magnitude are often felt but only cause minor damage.

Earthquakes have been reported in other parts of New Jersey over the past few year, including quakes near Califon, Gladstone, Hasbrouck Heights, Hillsdale and Randolph.
