Emerge Taps Assemblywoman Mila Jasey For 2nd Annual Building The Bench Panel

Assemblywoman Mila Jasey will speak at Emerge New Jersey’s Second Annual Building The Bench Breakfast this Thursday, April 20, 2017. The premier political training organization will host its event at the New Jersey Education Association office on 180 West State Street in Trenton, New Jersey

“I have seen the results of Emerge New Jersey training first hand, and the caliber of elected officials it produces is simply outstanding,” said Assemblywoman Jasey. “I have been involved in the Emerge New Jersey effort since its beginning, and while I wish such an opportunity had been available when I first considered running for school board, I am gratified that women desiring to become part of the political process have a proven vehicle that will allow them to be the change they seek.”

The event will begin at 8am with opening remarks delivered by U.S. Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, a long-time supporter of Emerge New Jersey. Thereafter, a political power panel with Assemblywoman Jasey, Assemblywoman Valerie Vanieri Huttle and Senator Sandra B. Cunningham will be moderated by award-winning reporter Deb Howlett.

Assemblywoman Jasey was first elected in 2007, and is serving her fifth term representing 14 towns in Essex and Morris counties. She is Chair of the Higher Education Committee, Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools, Vice-Chair of the Housing & Community Development Committee, and a Member of the Education Committee. She became Deputy Speaker in 2016.

During Assemblywoman Jasey’s tenure, several bills in which she has been a lead sponsor have been signed into law by three governors. These measures address the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury among student athletes, creation of the TBI Task Force, the NJ HERO Act promoting organ donation, the Mortgage Stabilization and Relief Act, and others.

Prior to joining the Assembly, she served as a Member of the South Orange/Maplewood Board of Education for three terms, including two years as President. Learn more about her experience and journey to elected office at the Second Annual Building The Bench Breakfast next week.
