Essex County Turtle Back Zoo, in West Orange, NJ, is looking for energetic and enthusiastic people for its 2017 Docent Class

Enjoy the rewarding experience of becoming a Zoo Docent.

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ is now recruiting volunteers for the 2017 Docent class. Docents are volunteer educators who interact with the public, providing guests with information about the Zoo and its animal collection. They give tours, do animal presentations, act as guides and are stationed throughout the Zoo, enhancing the visitors’ experience at the Zoo. A background in biology or zoology isn’t necessary, just a love of zoos, animals and an interest in public service.

  • submit an application found at: http://turtlebackzoo.com/docent-volunteers/ by January 15, 2017
  • complete an interview held on Sunday, January 22, 2017
  • complete a 7-day training course held on Sundays, beginning February 12, and running through the end of March, on Zoo grounds
  • pay a one-time fee of $25 to cover training materials
  • commit to volunteer a designated number of hours/events on at least two selected days a month, throughout the year
