The 14th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will take place on Monday, January 16, 2012 at Livingston High School. Below is a schedule of the day’s activities:
- 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (LHS cafeteria) – In keeping with Dr. King’s vision, community members are invited to join with local organizations to work on projects that will provide for the less fortunate. Projects include assembling emergency kits, collecting non-perishable foods and supplies for local food kitchens, and making crafts using recycled materials.
- 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (LHS auditorium) – Come see the animated movie Our Friend Martin about two students – one black and one white – who travel back in time and meet Dr. King. The students experience segregation firsthand when they aren't allowed to eat on a train together and witness the bus boycott, the Birmingham riots, and the "I Have a Dream" speech. The cast features stars Edward Asner, Angela Basset, James Earl Jones, LeVar Burton, Whoopie Goldberg, Danny Glover and Samuel L. Jackson.
- 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (LHS auditorium) – Stick around after the movie for some live music performed by bands Chromatic Funk and Castles.
The day will conclude with a walk around the Oval.
