Discover the Benefits of Environmentally Friendly Lawn Care

On March 23 at 8 pm at the Livingston Senior Community Center the League of Women Voters of Livingston, the Livingston Environmental Commission, and the Livingston Green Team.will co-sponsor an informational program on how to have a beautiful, healthy lawn that is also “green” and environmentally safe. 

Speakers at the program will address lawn care basics and requirements of state and local laws on when and how to apply fertilizer. The program will also address topics such as “What questions should I ask my lawn service to be sure they’re operating in an environmentally friendly manner?” and “When, if ever, is it appropriate to use pesticides?”  

Featured speakers at the March 23 program include Dr. Amy Rowe, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Environmental and Resource Management Agent for Essex and Passaic Counties , local landscaper Bob Fredette, and Suzanne Aptman, Co-Chair of Safe Yards Montclair.

Dr. Rowe will provide the background on the recently-adopted New Jersey Fertilizer Law and how lawn care products affect health and the environment,  Fredette, who is a certified Nursery and Landscape Professional and a graduate of the Rutgers program on Integrated Pest Management, will discuss practices for building a healthy lawn, using pesticides only when necessary. Aptman will define what a safe lawn is and give tips for working with your lawn care professional. 

As a follow-up to the March 23 program, there will be a Lawn and Garden Eco-Fair on Sunday, March 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Senior Community Center.  The Eco-Fair will provide opportunity to meet one-on-one with landscapers and lawn care professionals who provide organic and environmentally safe lawn care.
