Film Discussion of the Movie “A Serious Man”

Rabbi Mark Kaiserman will be conducting a film discussion of the movie “A Serious Man” at Temple Emanu-El of West Essex. This is one of a series of films in the Adult Education program throughout the Spring. Recent years have bought a flood of Jewish centered films from mainstream American movies to the Israeli film renaissance to independent films across the world. These films inspire us in their portrayal of Jews and Jewish Issues. But, they will also challenge us with new questions and controversies as only film can. In this modern-day remake of the book of Job from master movie-makers Ethan & Joel Coen, a teacher in a Minneapolis suburb desires to be taken as a serious man and do the right thing, but his life is falling apart.  Why, why, why, he wonders, doesn’t God take him seriously?

The discussion, following the movie presentation, will  begin at 5:00 pm, followed by dinner.  You are invited to bring your own dinner; we will provide desserts and beverages. After dinner the film discussion will commence at 7:30 pm. Program fee for this film presentation is $10.

For details contact the Temple office 973-992-5560 or www.emanuel.org.
