With the approaching of Rosh Hashanah – Jewish New Year (this year September 29 and 30) The Living Legacy is presenting a unique program. The Shofar Factory will introduce youngsters (and the young in spirit) to the arcane world of Shofar manufacturing.
The Shofar is an instrument crafted from a ram’s horn and is used as the highlight of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year service. Its sounds are simple but its manufacture is a complex process.
The hands-on involvement of the participants in this process makes for a rare instrument of education. Participants will have the opportunity, to saw, drill, polish, and shellac the horn to create a genuine kosher Shofar. The participants will then learn how to sound the Shofar following the traditional sequence of notes blown on Rosh Hashanah.

During the Shofar Factory the participants explore the upcoming holiday through songs and storytelling. The Shofar Factory, which includes visual aids such as posters, stuffed animal heads and various horns, will be presented at Friendship Circle office in addition to schools, Synagogues, Temples and Community Centers throughout northern New Jersey.
The Shofar Factory is the first in a series of dynamic programs designed to engage, challenge and actively involve Jewish youth in their priceless Jewish heritage. Titled The Living Legacy, the series offers the community, on a continuous basis, a resource for direct learners’ participation in the preparation/creation of ritual objects universally used in Jewish practice.
