“It Happened One Night” will be shown at 1:00 pm and again at 7:00 pm. Monday at the Movies Classic Films are an opportunity to see award-winning older films on the big screen as they were intended when originally made.
“It Happened One Night”, perfect for Valentine’s Day, is a charming love story within a screwball comedy of the 1930s. Claudette Colbert plays Ellie Andrews, a spoiled socialite who flees her controlling father and an ill-fated marriage. She meets Clark Gable’s character, Peter Warne, on a cross-country bus trip. Warne is an out-of-work reporter looking for a story, but, during the trip, a romance develops.
The film, which premiered on February 23, 1934, has many iconic scenes – Colbert showing off her leg to hitch a ride and Clark Gable’s shirtless scene. It was the first film ever to win five Academy Awards: best picture, best director, best actress, best actor and best screenwriting, and held this distinction for over forty years.
