Exit 6 Brobotics Wins Award at US Open Robotics Championships
Bringing a Successful End to a Season Long Journey of Learning

Competing at last month’s VEX IQ 2019 CREATE US Open Robotics Championships, Exit 6 Brobotics, Team #6280, returned home with the coveted Design Award in the Middle School Division, encompassing over 80 of the top teams from around North America and China. The Design Award is given to the team with the most effective and efficient robot design process. Design Award is one of only 9 awards given at the tournament.
This competition brought to a close their 2nd successful year in competitive robotics. In their first year, they won the top award in NJ, Excellence Award, and went on to compete at the VEX IQ World Championships. The 2018/2019 Team members included 7th graders, Varun Sohal, Tyrus Yung, Jason Mo, and 6th grader Ryan Lam. The VEX IQ CREATE US Open Robotics Championships was held in Council Bluffs Iowa, April 1-3, 2019. Exit 6 Brobotics, qualified for the competition on the basis of their performance at various qualifiers in New Jersey during the VEX IQ season.
One of the primary missions of the VEX IQ Challenge is to help students acquire real world life skills that will benefit them in their academic and professional future. The Exit 6 Brobotics team embraced those goals and put them into action as evidenced by their reflections of the season. Sohal noted that as a team they were able to collectively create especially unique robots that caught the attention of judges. During the year Sohal also cited the teams improvement in programming with sensors, presentation skills, and engineering notebook. Yung concluded that the season, while fun and interactive was also highly competitive, which made the entire process exciting. He felt that the journey to being one of the top teams was very tough, but well worth all the hard work invested. Mo also noted a big improvement in team cooperation and bonding that helped make the season an overall success. Lam had a blast building new and different robots throughout the season and also noted how competitive robotics has made a huge difference the development of each member on the team. Each person was more effective at communicating with new people and through the research project portion, learned about many of environmental challenges facing earth today.
