'False Alarm' Prompts Brief Lockdown at Essex County High School

Maplewood Police checked the building, it was determined to be safe and students returned to class, officials said.

Columbia High School in Maplewood was briefly locked down Wednesday morning, in what police said was a ”false alarm.”

Maplewood Police said the school was checked thoroughly by law enforcement personnel before students returned to class.

“All students are safely sheltered and we are looking forward to resuming our schedule for lunch and the rest of our academic day shortly,” the school said in an email to parents around 11:40 a.m.

No further information as to what prompted the lockdown was immediately available.

Columbia High School serves students in both South Orange and Maplewood. It is located on Academy Street.
