Fire Log: Smokey Situations

Account of activity of the LFD for past week.

Livingston firefighters responded to a garage fire and a smokey situation at Care One this week, among other calls that caused alarm.

Below is the log of activity from May 11 to May 17.

Tuesday, May 11 — A fire alarm transmission was reported at Care One.  A detector in a room had activated, but it turned out to be a faulty detector.  Also, there was a general alarm situation at the care facility, with a report of a fire in building. Upon LFD's arrival, firefighters found a slight smoke and odor condition in rear wing of building. All of occupants were evacuated.  The condition was as result of burned motor on HVAC unit in attic.

Wednesday, May 12 – The department responded to three calls.

LFD found a primary wire burning in a tree near South Orange Avenue and Kennedy Parkway.   JCP&L was notified, but firefighters stood by in case tree branch fell into roadway.

A fire alarm transmission activated at a home on Amherst Place due to steam from shower.  

The director of the Livingston Library reported a gas odor in the Café area. Firefighters detected a slight odor in the area, PSE&G was notified to respond.  

Thursday, May 13 — LFD went on three calls.

Fire alarm transmission activated at a resident on N. Hillside Avenue as result of contractor removing heat detector.  

Fire alarm transmission activated at home on E. Cedar Street.  System was being tested and signal was not held.

Report of strange odor coming from area near on Ross Road, which was as result of construction in the area.

Saturday, May 15 — Firefighters responded to two calls, both at Livingston High School.  There was a fire alarm transmission due to activation in duct.  Area was checked, but nothing was found.  Also, there was repeat fire alarm activation, roof top unit was checked, but a reason for activation could not be found.  System was reset and school authorities notified.  Detector will be removed from system.

Sunday, May 16 — Report of a garage fire on Troy Drive.  Upon arrival, LFD found flammable liquids burning on rear shelf of garage.  Fire was extinguished and residence was vented.  No extension to structure.

Monday, May 17  — Firefighters responded to three calls.

There was a single motor vehicle accident with vehicle leaking fuel on Robert Harp Drive. Plug used to stop leak along with absorbent pads.  Vehicle was towed from scene.

Fire alarm transmission in room #4 at the Livingston Mall.  Area was checked, but nothing was found.  Alarm was caused by a manual pull station.  

Fire alarm transmission at residence on Melrose Drive, alarm was set off in error.
