Flood Watch Issued For Essex County: See The Latest Rainfall Predictions

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service has predicted 1-2 inches of rain for New York City and northeastern New Jersey through Tuesday evening, and issued a flood watch for Essex County until 5 p.m. Tuesday.

A "flash flood outlook" said 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall in the region, putting the area in the "slight risk" category for rapid onset flooding.

While the rainfall expectations may not be as high as the sudden drenching that flooded the region a year ago during Storm Ida, 2-4 inches is a significant rainfall.

Essex, Union, Passaic, Hudson, and Bergen counties are under the flood watch.

Accweather radar shows a wide band of storms in the area, although the bulk of the rain is further north.

For Tuesday during the day, the forecast for the Caldwell Airport area says, "Showers. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 73. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible."

That's in addition to three-quarters of an inch that could fall before and after, the NWS says.
