Hear the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July

Livingston's 19th annual public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 11:30 on Independence Day morning, at the Gazebo on the Oval.

Our Founding Fathers suggested that the most appropriate way to observe the anniversary of our nation's independence was to re-read the Declaration on that date. In 2000, Livingston joined a growing number of communities across the United States that offer a traditional public reading of the revolutionary founding document on the Fourth of July.

The presentation, delivered by longtime Livingston resident Peter Berkowsky, takes place in comfortable surroundings, at the Gazebo across the Oval from the Public Library. The reading is generally preceded by a brief "warmup" talk and discussion on a related patriotic subject. The entire program takes less than an hour.

This year's program -- which is appropriate for all ages, adults and students alike -- will start promptly at 11:30 on Wednesday morning, July 4th. There are lots of seats in the shady and naturally cooled Gazebo, but they fill up fast. In case of rain, the program will be held in the high school auditorium.
