Did Your School Make the Grade?

Livingston schools received their report cards Tuesday from the state of New Jersey. The reports show how the measure up and provide breakdowns in a myriad of categories, including instructional time, class size, attendance, teacher degree level and computer use.

“The hallmark of a great place to live includes great schools and a community dedicated to its children twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Livingston is that community,” said Dr. Brad Draeger, Superintendent of Livingston Public Schools in his report to the state Department of Education.

Livingston stacks up against the state average in most categories, including test schools. We spend less per student, $13,712. The length of Livingston school day is less than the state average, the reports show. Class sizes at some schools are higher than state average. Children speak a wide range of languages, including Mandarin, Thai and Russian.

According to the Department of Education, one of its goals is to increase school- and district-level accountability for educational progress by communicating useful information to members of the public to be used in measuring how well their schools are doing. The New Jersey School Report Card has provided the public with information about every school in New Jersey since 1995 when the Legislature mandated the annual accountability report.

The annual report includes financial information from every school district and data on graduation rates, faculty experience, and standardized test results. There are also details about how each school stacks up against federal No Child Left Behind requirements.
