Fair warning… The deadline for federal tax returns – April 15 – is now only a week away.
There’s no need to panic yet, though. There are several local resources for residents seeking a free and safe way to file their taxes.
“Each year, New Jersey residents lose much of their tax return to high commercial preparation fees because they simply do not know where to turn for reliable and affordable help,” states the United Way on their website.

“Additionally, many low-income and ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households miss out on thousands of dollars by not claiming critical tax credits – like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Education Tax Credits – designed to provide relief.
“Millions of dollars in specialized credits go unclaimed every year, often because families and individuals do not know they exist. These much-needed extra funds can be the first step on the road to financial stability, helping pay down debts or creating savings for emergencies.”

FILE ONLINE
NJ211, an informational service provided by several state agencies and NJ United Way chapters, recommends that residents use MyFreeTaxes.com. The online tax preparation service – free for anyone whose income is less than $60,000 - is sponsored by Goodwill Industries International, the National Disability Institute, the United Way and the Walmart Foundation, and is powered by H&R Block software.
According to its website, the online program is now in its 6th year of national operation, and adheres to IRS rules and regulations. For more information, residents can contact info@myfreetaxes.com.
FILE IN PERSON
“If you prefer to get personal assistance to file your taxes, there are many assistance sites throughout New Jersey that are staffed by volunteers who are trained to prepare both federal and state returns,” explains NJ211 on their website.
“Many of these sites prepare tax returns on computers and utilize electronic filing. Electronic filing, or e-filing, is quick and accurate and provides taxpayers with a much quicker refund. There is no charge for this service.”
