Sports Wrap: LHS Tennis Plays for Crown Thursday

LHS to meet Delbarton in Tournament of Champions finals; Volleyball also wins semifinal match.

TENNIS

Kevin Sun and Spencer Luster won at second doubles and Matt Wolff and Jesse Bloom took the point at first doubles to spur top-seeded Livingston to a 5-0 victory over fourth-seeded Millburn yesterday at the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions at Inman Sports Club in Edison.

Livingston (35-0) will take on third-seeded Delbarton (28-2) in the final Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mercer County Park. It could win its first overall title since 1977.

In Livingston’s four previous victories against Millburn (23-8), it lost at the doubles positions twice each. Yesterday, Wolff and Bloom clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win and Luster and Sun put the Lancers up 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

Second-singles player Brandon Goldstein won 6-0, 6-1 to give Livingston a 1-0 lead. Thomas Caputo followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first singles for a 1-0 advantage.

Varun Dyapa gutted out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory to take the point at third singles.

 VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Kyle Rulka had 14 kills and Steven Birnbaum chipped in 33 assists to lead Livingston, the third seed, to a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Bayonne in the semifinals of the North Jersey, Section 2 playoffs on Wednesday.

The Lancers will meet top-seeded St. Peter’s Prep, the four-time and defending North Jersey champion, in the final on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Jersey City. Livingston, which seeks its first sectional crown, has yet to meet St. Peter’s this spring.

Against Bayonne, Livingston dropped the first game, 25-21, before winning the second, 25-23, and the third, 25-9.

 BASEBALL

The Lancer baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Union City in the semifinal of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament at Roosevelt Stadium in Union City on Tuesday.

Livingston (19-8) led 1-0 after the first round but surrendered a run in the second, two in the fourth and one run in the sixth.
