LHS Weekly Sports Wrap-Up

Baseball, softball, tennis and volleyball continue state tournaments this week

BASEBALL

Livingston started off its sectional title pursuit with a strong effort on Monday, recording an 8-2 victory over North Bergen in the first round of the North Jersey , Section 1, Group 4 tournament.

Brady McLaughlin hurled a three-hitter, striking out seven and walking three in improving to 3-2. Livingston led, 2-1, before breaking the game open with a six-run sixth inning. John Sorrentino singled in two runs, Connor Kimmel doubled in two runs, Jordan Farmer doubled in Kimmel and McLaughlin capped the frame with an RBI single.

The Lancers (16-7), which earned the eighth seed, will play at top-seeded Randolph in a sectional quarterfinal on Friday at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Lancers had a flair for the dramatic as it began play in the state tournament on Tuesday as it needed eight innings to earn a 4-2 victory over Randolph in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament.

Sam Rothenberger led off the top of the eighth with a double and Kylie McLaughlin reached on an error. Alex Bell, who was 2-for-4, then singled in both to snap a 2-2 tie. Livingston took a 2-0 lead in the fourth as Rachel Wasilak and Jess Icolari each singled in a run. Randolph knotted the score with two runs in the sixth. Jess Peslak finished with a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Livingston (15-8-1), the 10th seed, will play at second-seeded Morris Knolls in a sectional quarterfinal on Thursday at 4 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Livingston was able to tie Colts Neck with 2:52 remaining in the fourth quarter but bowed in overtime, 13-12, in the preliminary round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 3 tournament on Friday, May 20.

Austin Liu led the way for the Lancers with three goals and two assists. Andrew Lesser and Anthony D’Aloia also connected for three goals and Abe Choe added two goals and three assists and Tyler DaSilva had a goal and an assist. John Coyne registered nine saves and Nathan Liebes halted eight shots.

Livingston finished its boy’s lacrosse season at 7-11.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Livingston concluded its girl’s lacrosse season at 4-12 after suffering its sixth straight loss - 16-8 defeat to New Providence - on May 20.

Sami Atterman led the way this year with 41 goals with Dani Roten tallying 11 assists. Liz Cassola (17 goals), Jordy Bonvini (15), Jane Atterman (12) and Alyssa Egner (8) were the other leading goal scorers for the Lady Lancers according to the NJ.com website.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Lancers, which received the third seed as well as a bye in the NJSIAA, North 2 state tournament, will face a familiar foe on Thursday when it hosts sixth-seeded Harrison in a sectional quarterfinal at 4 p.m.

Livingston improved to 21-5 in its last regular season game – a straight set 25-13, 25-17 decision over Harrison on May 20.

Steven Birnbaum led the way against Harrison with a 21-assist, four-dig, four-blog effort. Edward Jung added 14 digs, Jayson Patel totaled eight assists, six kills and two blocks and Allan Friedman had five kills, two digs and one block.
