Livingston Digs Out From Blizzard: Local Winter Snowstorm Updates
The icy grasp of winter isn't done with Livingston yet. Here's what to know heading into Tuesday.
LIVINGSTON, NJ — The icy grasp of winter isn’t done with Livingston yet.
Livingston was among the New Jersey towns that were walloped with more than a foot of snow on Sunday and Monday. The blizzard wreaked havoc on power lines and roadways across the state – and even sparked reports of a rare weather phenomenon known as “thundersnow.”
Livingston town officials issued a local weather advisory on Saturday and an update on Sunday.

Another update was issued on Monday.
"Livingston remains in the midst of the winter storm, with heavy snowfall and strong winds continuing to impact travel conditions across the region," the town's advisory said.

"Township crews have been working throughout the night to treat and clear roads," the advisory continues. "However, snowfall rates have been significant, and in many cases roads begin to accumulate again shortly after being plowed. This can make it appear as though roads have not been cleared even after crews have passed through."
"Public works operations will continue throughout the day, focusing on primary corridors, emergency routes, and pathways to schools before moving into neighborhood streets," the advisory said. "Residents are strongly encouraged to remain home whenever possible to allow crews the space needed to keep roadways passable.
Utility providers are responding to outages with additional crews and mutual aid. If power goes out, Livingston residents can report it to their utility provider:
- Jersey Central Power & Light: 1-888-544-4877
- PSE&G: 1-800-436-7734
"We’ve seen the 'free snow shoveling class' posts making the rounds online," Livingston officials said. "While there may not be an official class happening in anyone’s driveway, helping a neighbor with shoveling when it is safe to do so is always appreciated."
Township crews will continue working on Monday as conditions allow, officials said.
Some other reminders included:
Snow Removal and Safety
- Keep vehicles off roadways to allow plows and emergency vehicles to operate
- Give road crews space to perform their work safely
- Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance
- Keep fire hydrants and home exhaust vents clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide hazards
- Please do not shovel, plow, or blow snow back into the street, as this creates hazardous conditions and slows snow removal operations
Safe Snow Shoveling Tips
- Take frequent breaks and avoid overexertion
- Push snow when possible rather than lifting
- Lift small amounts and use proper posture
- Stay hydrated and dress in layers
- Be mindful of ice under fresh snow
- Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath
