For more than 100 years the members of the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department have proudly served the Township of Livingston protecting life and property. These dedicated volunteers, who are your neighbors, have over the years earned an enviable reputation for excellence and professionalism among their peers in the fire service. Under the leadership of a full time Chief and Assistant Chief, the department operates with a contingent of 56 volunteer firefighters and three volunteer Deputy Chiefs. The members of the Livingston Fire Department are on call twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year to provide fire protection and other emergency services to the residents of Livingston. The dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by these volunteers translates into a significant savings in municipal taxes and insurance premiums to every residential and commercial property owner in Livingston.
In 2024, the Department responded to 24 general fire alarms and 1,168 miscellaneous calls for emergency service. Additionally, they answered numerous mutual aid requests from other fire departments in neighboring communities throughout the year. The ever increasing demands of a rapidly evolving community like Livingston require our volunteer firefighters to keep current with advanced firefighting and emergency response techniques. In addition to weekly in house Department training drills these volunteers, on their own time, also participate in State & County coordinated firefighting and disaster response training programs, and attend training for hazardous materials handling and conduct yearly First Aid & CPR lifesaving training. The Livingston Fire Department also sponsors an annual open house during National Fire Prevention Week to educate the community about fire safety, awards scholarships to three Livingston High School graduates, and conducts numerous fire education programs throughout the year at local grammar schools, business and civic organizations.
