The Livingston Health Department held its annual Go Pink for Breast Cancer event on Oct. 3 at Livingston Town Hall. The event consisted of breast cancer education provided by the Health Department and RWJ Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, a blood pressure screening, flu vaccines, and giveaways. The West Essex YMCA and Tropical Smoothie Café also participated in the event. Livingston Township employees and community residents were invited to attend.
Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. Breast cancer can cause different signs and symptoms, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. Getting screened can help detect breast cancer early on before symptoms appear, thus allowing for early treatment. Women aged 40 and older should discuss mammograms with their health care provider including when to start screening and how often.

Anyone with concerning symptoms should see a health care provider to be checked. Common symptoms of breast cancer include finding a lump in the breast or under arm, dimpling, breast pain, nipple discharge, redness, and changes in shape or size.
Breast cancer is most often detected in women aged 50 and older, although younger women and men can be diagnosed. While some risk factors for breast cancer cannot be controlled, certain lifestyle changes may help lower your risk, including: maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically active, consuming the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, and consuming alcohol in moderation.
