“Influenza (flu) is highly contagious. It spreads through the United States every winter, typically peaking in January and February. It is caused by influenza viruses, which spread through coughing, sneezing and close contact with anyone who is infected. Everyone is at risk of getting the flu; however, those at highest at risk are children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system or other chronic health conditions.
“Symptoms of the flu include fever/chills, sore throat, muscle aches, cough, headache, and a runny or stuffy nose. The flu can also lead to more serious complications like pneumonia. Each year over 200,000 people are hospitalized for the flu and nearly 40,000 people die from vaccine-preventable complications.

“This year’s vaccination has been shown to be much more effective than last year’s shot, which we know ended up being far less effective than normal. The flu shot is the safest and most cost-effective way to keep you and your family safe from the flu this coming season. It can prevent lost school and work days along with serious health complications. Everyone ages six months and older should get the flu shot.
“To prevent getting the flu: get vaccinated, wash your hands often, eat a balanced diet, and get plenty of sleep. If you do get the flu, stay at home and call your doctor. If diagnosed early enough, the doctor may prescribe anti-viral medications that can shorten recovery time from the flu.”
