Livingston Home Saved From Total Fire Devastation: Alert Neighbor Lends Aid

An alert neighbor and a quick response from the LFD may have helped to prevent any injuries during a recent home fire on Edgemere Road.

Livingston, NJ – An alert neighbor and a quick response from the Livingston Fire Department may have helped to prevent any injuries during a recent home fire on Edgemere Road.

According to the Livingston Fire Department, the blaze took place on Thursday around 8 p.m. Although the family had operational smoke detectors on all interior living floor spaces, the residents were unaware because the blaze began in the attic where there are no detectors located.

The residents of the home safely escaped when a neighbor banged on the front door and alerted them about the fire, authorities stated.

Firefighters managed to knock down the blaze within 15 minutes of arrival, Livingston Fire Chief Christopher Mullin told Patch.

"Our firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire located above the second floor bedrooms and extending across the attic horizontally,” Mullin said. “Fire crews had to pull ceilings on the second floor to fully access and extinguish all visible fire and wet-down hot spots.”

Mullin said that firefighters worked in a “professional and aggressive manner,” and that although fire damage was limited to the attic floor structural rafters and the roof, crews managed to save the rest of the house.

“I commend our firefighters for another excellent stop, limiting damage and fire loss to the structure involved,” Mullin said. “I also commend the Livingston First Aid Squad for their assistance at the scene for watching over our firefighters and for providing hydration as well as the Livingston Police Department for controlling access to the neighboring streets.”
