A Ukranian Village In Livingston: Kids'' 'Fiddler On The Roof' Performance Is Timely

LIVINGSTON, NJ — The "Tradition" of in-person theater is back in local schools, and with a timely show to boot — the setting for "Fiddler on the Roof" was modeled on a small Ukranian village.

The young thespians of Livingston High School will appear in four performances of the classic musical Thursday through Saturday.

Based in a Russian settlement around 1905, it follows Tevye the milkman, who tries to maintain his Jewish customs as his daughters want to marry for love, rather than following their father's choices. Amid the family dynamics, the tzar is trying to evict the Jews from the village.

The musical opened on Broadway in 1964 and was adapted into a 1971 film. Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, it's known for familiar numbers such as "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were A Rich Man," "Matchmaker" and "Tradition."

The shows are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m., with a matinee Saturday at 2 p.m.

Masks are required for the show.
