Livingston Marks ADA Anniversary

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law 20 years ago.

With the upcoming 20th Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act, Livingston's Township Council took time at Monday's meeting to recognize the landmark legislation by presenting a "Proclamation of Recommitment to Full Implementation of the ADA."

"This act influenced millions of people and has made a huge difference," said Mayor Arlene Johnson, before presenting a plaque to members of Livingston's Advisory Committee for Disabilities (LACD), whom the mayor praised for doing "so much good work" for the community.  The group often throws parties for children with special needs.

In 1990, President George H. Bush signed the ADA, which expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities; but, according to the Livingston proclamation, the full promise of the ADA can only be reached if public entities remain committed to their efforts to fully implement the ADA and be compliant.  Livingston has recommitted to making sure that the township's buildings and services, for example, are fully accessible to people with disabilities.
