Livingston Police Seeks Tips To Solve Fire, Burglary

Public help sought to solve a suspicious fire and burglary attempt.

Livingston police and fire officials are seeking the public’s help in solving a pair of incidents in the township.

In the first incident, Livingston police are looking for a possible second suspect in an attempted home burglary on Ross Road Tuesday.

Police reported they received an emergency call from a maid working in the home around 8:50 a.m., according to Livingston Public Information Officer Det. Sgt. Anthony Dippold.

The maid told police someone rang the front doorbell then they tried to enter the back of the house by prying open a sliding door, Dippold said.

Livingston police arrived at the house and arrested Grover Drakeford, 25, of Maplewood, who was standing in the driveway. He allegedly had gloves and a screwdriver at the time of his arrest.

Drakeford was charged with attempted burglary, possession of a burglary tool, criminal mischief and conspiracy, Dippold said.

Police believe a second suspect may have been involved in the burglary attempt, but that suspect fled, Dippold said.

In the second incident, officials are investigating a fire that broke out around 4:30 a.m. last Sunday at the former Ricci's at Livingston restaurant located at 498 S. Livingston Ave., according to Livingston Fire Chief Chris Mullin.

The restaurant, which is under renovation, had minor smoke damage, but no structure damage.

Mullin said Tuesday fire officials determined the building was broken into and the fire was intentionally set.

Livingston police and the Essex County Arson Squad are investigating, Mullin said.

Anyone with information about either case may contact the Livingston police detective division at (973) 992-3000. All tips will be kept confidential.
