Livingston Public Library Offers Spring Lecture Series

The Livingston Public Library has announced that a new 3-part lecture series will be held once a month from April to June.  The series will focus on Art Around the World and residents can attend it at no charge.  Reservations are not required.

The series will feature highlights from the Newark Museum.  Established in 1809, the Newark Museum is the largest in New Jersey and features over 80 galleries of world-class collections, including American, Asian, African and Classical arts.

The next lecture in the series will be May 7 at 7:30 p.m.  It is titled Out of Africa: Art in Rituals, Ceremonies and Daily Life and will be given by Patsy Nance from the Newark Museum.  It will be illustrated with slides of selected paintings, sculpture, photographs, drawings and decorative arts from the world-renowned African Art galleries at the Newark Museum. 

The African Arts collection has more than 4,000 objects that rank among the nation's oldest and most comprehensive pieces.  The lecture will feature traditional, popular urban and fine arts masks, figural sculpture and pottery, as well as textiles, dress, jewelry, furniture, photography and paintings.

The first lecture in the series was held on April 17 and was titled Picturing America: 250 Years of American Art.  Following the May lecture, the third and final one will be on Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m.  That one is titled Asian and Tibetan Art.
