  • Stay in a place where there is air conditioning. A fan will not keep you cool when it is really hot out and the temperature is around 95°F or higher. Taking a cool bath or shower can also help.
  • Hot cars are very dangerous. Do not stay in the car or leave pets or children in the car, even if the windows are rolled down.
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water or other liquids that are non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated. Remember to keep pets well hydrated, too.
  • Wear summer clothes that are lightweight, light colored and loose fitting. If you are going outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect your skin.
  • Avoid being outdoors during the hottest time of the day: about 10 am – 5 pm.
  • Keep any windows in your home covered with blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Avoid using your oven/stove to cook on really hot days if you can.
  • Check on friends/neighbors/family/pets that may be more susceptible to the effects of the heat to make sure they are OK.
  • Make sure to know the signs of heat cramps, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion — and how to respond. Learn more at ready.gov/heat.
