Livingston Store Closing After 119 Years
A fixture of the Livingston business community will be shutting its doors at the end of October: SAMS Fine Men's Clothing.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — A fixture of the Livingston community will be shutting its doors at the end of October: SAMS Fine Men’s Clothing. The local business, which began as a pushcart in Newark before finding its permanent home on the corner of South Livingston Avenue in 1967, will be holding a “Retirement Sale” beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5.
The owners of the men’s and boy’s clothing retailer – who have been providing the Essex County community with suits, tuxes and sportswear for decades – gave an appropriately classy farewell message on Tuesday.
“This business has been a source of pleasure and pride to us and our families since our grandfather first opened it in 1899,” co-owner Jeffrey Cohen said. “With almost 12 decades under our belts, it’s time to hang up our sport coats and embark on the next chapter of our lives. It’s been an honor and privilege to dress the community and play a role in so many special occasions.”

A Facebook post from SAMS provided more information about the closure:
“This business, which our grandfather Chaim Cohen first opened in 1899, has been a source of pleasure and pride to us and out families over the years. Like all businesses, we’ve had to evolve, from our beginnings as a pushcart in Newark that morphed into a mens and ladies shop on Prince Street. Following the riots in 1967, we moved into our current location, originally as an Army-Navy store and finally becoming the fine mens and boys specialty store you know us to be today. It’s been a great run, but for everyone the time comes to move on."
As it prepares to close its doors for the last time, SAMS plans to host the “biggest sale in its history,” liquidating all its stock, including new fall 2018 arrivals from brands such as Canali, Jack Victor, Peter Millar, Hiltl, David Donohue, Cole Haan and Robert Graham. Items will be reduced 20 to 50%. (Click here to learn more about this local business)
