Livingston Teen Playwright Makes Off-Broadway Debut With ‘Rooftop’

LIVINGSTON, NJ — It’s cool enough to say you wrote and co-directed a play as a 17-year-old. But when it sells out two shows in a row, that’s the icing on the cake.

Livingston teen and playwright Kushal Dhungana recently hit the big stage, premiering his 10-minute play, "Rooftop," in an off-Broadway theater as part of the prestigious Midtown International Theatre Festival's Short Play Lab.

Dhungana wrote and co-directed the production, which sold-out performances on July 15 and 16.

Dhungana and the play’s co-director, Pharaoh Knighton, a senior at West Orange High School, were the youngest directors at the summer festival.

The play tells the story of a couple who “reflect on past marriages, lost love and the pain in their lives,” Dhungana said.
