Livingston Woman Wakes Up To Find Burglar With Gun In House

Two teens were captured by Livingston police after a woman awoke during a home burglary.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — The Livingston police arrested two teens from Newark after a resident awoke to find them inside her home, and saw one of them holding a gun, police said.

Police said that at 5:47 a.m. on July 25, Livingston police responded to a Chelsea Drive residence on a report of burglary in progress.

The homeowner said she woke up to find "multiple suspects with a handgun inside of the residence."

They left with the victim's purse, then stole a Cadillac Escalade, police said.

Police arrived to find a stolen BMW leaving the scene, and pursued it onto Route 280, police said.

After other agencies became involved, the vehicle crashed in East Orange, and two men were apprehended.

Jaquil Buie, 18, and Travis Andrews, 18, of Newark, were charged with burglary, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, possession of burglars' tools, conspiracy, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of handgun, two counts of prohibited weapons, three counts of theft, and credit card theft.

Buie was also charged with eluding and aggravated assault.

Both were taken to the Essex County Jail on the charges, and the investigation is ongoing by the Livingston Detective Bureau.

Attempted Vehicle Theft

Also during the last week in July, at 5:54 a.m. on July 31, Livingston officers responded to a Lafayette Drive residence on report of several suspects attempting to steal vehicles.

Upon officers' arrival, they met with the victim, who provided surveillance video showing someone getting into the victim's unlocked Mercedes. But he found that he couldn't steal it, and left.
