Looking at Camps? Look No Farther Than Your Own Backyard

We got a wide range of camps right here in Livingston.

Snow may still cover the ground, but we see patches of green and the promise of -- dare we say? -- summer.  And if we're thinking summer, we're beginning to think about summer camps.

Livingston’s Senior Youth & Leisure Services did just that on Sunday and it sponsored a Camp Open House at the Senior/Community Center. Attendees were treated to a sneak peak at the wide range of camps the town will offer this summer for kids in preschool through Grade 7. Some of the highlights include:

* A choice of half-day (9 a.m. to noon) or full-day camp (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

* Six weeks of specialty mini-camps that run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and promise hours of fun with crafts, projects, scrapbooking, and more.

* Expanded swimming hours.

* Sports Camps featuring baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer, wrestling, track, volleyball, and field hockey.

* Sessions in partnership with the firm Mad Science that are designed to involve “children in scientific explorations that are so much fun, children will forget they’re learning.”

* A camp play where campers get to be part of the cast of the popular musical Annie.

* Field trips with destinations including the Bronx Zoo, Liberty Science Center, Powerhouse Studios, and Tomahawk Lake.

* 7th Grade Leaders In Training during which 7th raders will have a special opportunity to engage in teambuilding, and problem-solving as they release their “inner leaders” and advance toward becoming CITs.

Brian Cohen, director of the township's summer camp, said "We offer a wide range of activities designed to appeal to different interest levels.”

He also said the camp is “constantly changing to meet the demands of the public” as evidenced by the recently added full-day session which goes to 3 p.m. to meet the needs of parents who need a few more hours of childcare.  Similarly, the camp, for the second year in a row, is offering its popular “Walk-To” program, where staff members  walk kids whose camp sessions end at 3 p.m. from Heritage Middle School to the Senior/Community Center so that the kids can participate in the specialty mini-camps.

Summer camp registration beings March 15 at 8:30 a.m.  The 2011 Summer Camp Trip List is available online at http://livingsyls.org.
