The kids are with the babysitter and you and your spouse are free for a few hours. Where to go?
Trek over to the charming town of Madison and experience Shanghai Jazz for an adults-only night of sumptuous Asian cuisine accompanied by red-hot jazz. Since opening in 1995, this club has earned rave reviews for its food, service, and ambience from the New York Times, Star Ledger, Zagat Survey and Inside New Jersey.
Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by the restaurant’s warm, friendly staff who will show you to a table amidst elegant décor reminiscent of jazz clubs you’ve seen in old movies, only without the unhealthy haze of cigarette smoke. Gourmet Asian cuisine is on the menu and the service is efficient, but never hurried. This is leisurely dining at its best. Tension melts away as the show starts and you’re enveloped by the seductive music of renowned jazz performers.

A few personal recommendations:
- Reservations are a MUST, especially on the weekends when Shanghai Jazz offers two seatings. Rather than feeling rushed by this, I found it efficient. If you book the earlier seating, you know what time dinner will be over and can tell your sitter accordingly.
- Parking in Madison can be an issue, especially on the weekends. Leave a little extra early so you’re not rushing.
- Again, leave the kids at home. The music can get quiet and as cute as your kids are, no one wants to hear them during the show. I’ve never seen anyone bring even a baby to this place. It’s really a gem for adults.
- Finish your meal with the Homemade Apple Cobbler With Ice Cream. It’s to die for!
Although there is never a cover charge for the music (unless there’s a special event), plan on spending a minimum of $25 for dinner, not including alcohol, tax, or gratuity. For more information, log onto their Web site at www.shanghaijazz.com where you’ll also find a schedule of performers.
