New Assistant Principal Heads to Livingston High School

Brian Deutsch, a special education teacher from Mountain Lakes High School, will join the Livingston school district.


A new administrator will be joining Livingston High School next month when Brian Deutsch, a special education teacher from Mountain Lakes High School in Morris County, will become the new assistant principal.

Deutsch, who is from Summit, was appointed to the position by the Livingston Board of Education on Monday night. Deutsch is expected to start by mid-February and will take the place of Gary Suda, who is the new principal of West Essex Regional High School.

The New York native has worked in education 15 years. Deutsch said in a phone interview he first became interested in teaching when he got volunteered in special education at Long Beach High School in Long Island.

Deustch, who received an undergraduate degree in anthropology from Colorado College, went on to earn a master's degree in special education at New York University. He later earned an educational leadership master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Deustch has taught high school special education in San Diego, Calif., and Mamaroneck, N.Y. He also served as executive director of Sylvan Learning Center in Nassau and Westchester counties in New York.

Deustch said he looks forward to working with the Livingston students and the "excellent community of educators" in the school district.

"The teachers are really some of the state's best teachers at Livingston and the reputation as a high performing school it top notch," Deutsch said.

“Mr. Deutsch brings unique experiences and expertise to our administrative staff and we certainly look forward to him joining our team next month," said LHS principal Mark Stern. 

As one of three assistant principals, Deutsch said he will share attendance and discipline responsibilities, as well as help with Advance Placement test coordination and supervising the security staff, among other tasks.

Deutsch said he would also like to do some special education work. In his spare time. Deustch also volunteers as a lacrosse coach and he plans to continue helping out at Seton Hall Prep.

His salary will be $105,682.
