Boys and young men who enjoy singing are invited to audition for the Boys’ Ensemble (fifth through eighth grades with unchanged voices) or the Young Men’s Ensemble (seventh through twelfth grades with changing and changed voices). The audition process is fun, friendly and stress-free; a love of singing and enthusiasm for music are the most important requirements. The NJYC provides a unique musical education that encourages a love and appreciation of choral music while nurturing personal growth and creative development in a warm, supportive atmosphere. The First Steps to Music program is designed to develop children’s singing voices,
listening and literacy skills as they explore the elements of music through body movement, dance and games. The Apprentice Chorus is a performing ensemble in which musical concepts are taught through choral literature, folk songs, folk dance and musical games. Past Apprentice Chorus performances have included the National Anthem for the Mets at Citi Field and collaboration with the New Jersey State Opera. The Boys’ Ensemble, the only ensemble of its kind in the state of New Jersey, provides a supportive environment in which boys can develop their voices and be taken through their changing voice as it naturally develops. Choristers learn to become comfortable with themselves as singers, and get the support they need to keep singing a vital part of their lives. The Young Men’s Ensemble promotes collegiality and fosters collaboration among young men through song. Members are dedicated to learning significant amounts of vocal technique and aural, sight-singing and ensemble skills in a comfortable, united atmosphere. The Young Men’s Ensemble performs in several concerts throughout the year at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Prudential Center, Temple University, Mayo Performing Arts Center, and the IZOD Center.
