Newark Academy Middle Schoolers Perform At Lincoln Center

Newark Academy (NA) — an independent school for grades 6-12 in Livingston, NJ — was selected as one of just 14 middle school ensembles in the New York City metropolitan area to perform in the Chamber Music Society (CMS) Young Ensembles Program in the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at CMS at Lincoln Center on May 23, 2024.

Under the leadership of Orchestra Director Oliver Hagen, NA's Middle School Chamber Music, featuring Rohit Barua ’28 (cello), Mia Li ’28 (violin) and Sathvik Subramanian ’27 (piano), performed the second movement of Mendelssohn’s D minor Piano Trio, op. 49. As part of the program, the NA musicians also received professional coaching from Chamber Music Society pianist Sahun Sam Hong prior to taking the stage.

“This is an incredible achievement for NA’s Middle School program to be recognized by one of the top chamber music performing organizations in the country, and to have the opportunity to work with one of their world-class artists,” says Hagen.

The Chamber Music Society (CMS) has long provided extraordinary opportunities for young musicians early in their careers, including the Danish String Quartet, pianist Jonathan Biss, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, clarinetist Anthony McGill and many more. The Young Ensembles program seeks to refine young musical talents in the spirit of chamber music, fostering both individual growth and collaborative excellence.
