N.J. Mother Put Baby In Plastic Bag, Threw Child Over Fence

Rosibel Lanza has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of her baby.

A 40-year-old city woman is going to jail for giving birth to a boy, putting the newborn in a plastic bag and throwing it over a fence into her neighbor’s yard in New Jersey.

Rosibel Lanza has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of her baby, a first degree crime carrying a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison. But as part of the deal, she was to be sentenced in the second degree range, which is five to 10 years, according to nj.com.

“Ms. Lanza put the baby in a plastic bag, threw the baby over a fence in the plastic bag to, basically to the other side of the yard, to deter detection,” Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor John Mulkeen said in the Friday report.

“Some children heard a noise, what they thought was a cat, and they find the baby. They find some adults and they save the baby.”

The judge noted that the child has been adopted, it was born premature and has some cognitive issues, but it is not known yet whether the time the baby spent without oxygen in the bag has resulted in any cognitive issues, according to the report.

Authorities believe the Jersey City resident gave birth to the baby boy, who was about 11 or 12 weeks early, at home on Aug. 31, 2013, according to CBS New York.

The baby was found alive by children who were playing behind a Jersey City apartment building; the baby weighed less than three pounds when he was found but was doing well, according to the report.
