Burglary at Verizon Store on Mt. Pleasant

Officers also responded to a report of a 10-year-old Burnet Hill Elementary School student with a pocket knife.

An unknown number of telephones, accessories and cash were stolen in a burglary Monday at the Verizon Store on Mount Pleasant Avenue, according to police reports. Around 9:30 a.m., officers were notified by store employees that the store had been broken into sometime during the previous night. The thief, or thieves, apparently used a hatch on the roof of the store to break in.

Other notable fire and police department activity from December 2 to December 9:

December 4 — Around noon, police responded to a call from staff at Burnet Hill Elementary school who reported that a 10-year-old student had possession of a small, folding pocket knife.  There were no indications that the student was making threats or showing other students the weapon.

Fire: Fire officials reported a routine week. Some examples of calls:

December 3 — Firefighters responded to a brush fire at a residence on Mountain Ridge Road. Upon arrival, they found a small pile of leaves smoldering on a spotlight. The fire was extinguished and the homeowner advised.

Firefighters received a call of an alarm at Hudson City Savings at 277 Eisenhower Parkway. But the alarm was cancelled before the Fire Department got to the scene.

December 7 — Fire officials received a report of a toaster fire in a home on Belmont Drive. When firefighters arrived, they found no fire on the scene, just smoke.  They ventilated the residence and unplugged the toaster.
