Police Conduct Checkpoint On Northfield

Routine checks are aimed at making roads safer.

If you were traveling east on Northfield Road Wednesday afternoon, chances are you encountered the Livingston Traffic Unit Enforcement/Safety Detail of the Livingston Police Department. Officers were on hand with radar guns checking motor vehicle speed and randomly pulling drivers over for safety checks.

In addition to looking for speeders, law enforcement officials wanted to make sure people were not talking on their cell phones or texting while driving, wanted to insure sure everyone in the vehicle was wearing seat belts, and were checking for safety issues (like problems with headlights, brakes, and emissions).  According to Officer Joe Wnek, police have found “that most crashes could have been avoided if the vehicle’s equipment had been in working order.”

Traffic checks are conducted on a routine basis several times throughout the year. Sometimes they focus on passenger vehicles while at other times they focus on commercial vehicles.

According to Officer Wnek, in just a one hour period, the police gave out half a dozen tickets. The checkpoint continued for several hours.
